When do the breathable hunting sneakers make more sense than waterproof boots?

Any dry, warm day where waterproofing would just trap heat. Fully breathable sneakers keep feet cooler on a warm September roe buck approach, or early-season partridge work where wet ground isn't a factor. Put them in wet heather, and they give you nothing. They're a specific tool for specific days. But on those days, nothing waterproof comes close for comfort.

Do lightweight hunting boots last, or do they wear out faster than heavier ones?

Boot weight and boot lifespan are two different things. A cheap boot fails fast because it cuts corners on materials, not because it's light. Dyneema reinforcement at the toe, heel, and edges shrugs off the abrasion that kills lesser builds. Full-grain leather takes years of contact with rock and root that synthetics never handle.
